German speciality chemicals company Evonik has announced it will build its first research hub in Singapore with operations expected to begin in 2018. The R&D facility will focus on functional surfaces and additive manufacturing and will create around 50 jobs.

Claus Rettig, board chairman of Evonik Resource Efficiency, remarked: “The research hub in Singapore not only demonstrates our ongoing commitment to expand our R&D footprint in Asia but also reflects the growing significance of Asia in the global innovation landscape.” The research hub is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), which has helped Evonik grow its presence in Singapore over the past few years.

Beh Swan Gin, chairman of the EDB, said the site will support Singapore’s efforts in advanced manufacturing as well as strengthen its position in R&D and technologies in Asia and globally. The research hub will be situated in Biopolis, the center for entrepreneurial R&D activities in Singapore. Positioned near other public and private research institutions and organizations, Evonik said it will be able to leverage the existing R&D value chain and take advantage of synergies within the scientific research community.

The chemicals firm has production sites, sales offices, innovation and technical service centers located in the region in Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
