Michelin not giving up on Formula 1.
Despite losing their bid to Pirelli for becoming the official tyre supplier for Formula 1, Michelin has not yet given up on the idea of a return to F1 post 2020 when the current contract between Pirelli & F1 is due to expire.
Michelin remains keen on returning to Formula 1 as long as they switch from 13 inch wheel rims to 18 inch wheel rims. So far Pirelli has been the sole supplier of the F1 for half a decade and is contracted to maintain the status until year 2019.
In an interview given to the Autosport, the Michelin Motorsport Director Pascal Couasnon said that Michelin is still interested in the F1 but, they will not change their position unless the F1 series is not relevant anymore. Pascal also added saying, “”If we can be relying on the spirit of a race which is a good mix of show and technology and we can demonstrate our know-how, that’s fine. [But] they would have to move to 18-inch [wheel rims].” He continued further on the topic by mentioning that, Michelin believes that soon enough Formula 1 will have to make a move in order to transfer the technology from track to the street. To accomplish that they will one day need to move to 18 inch wheel rims as there will be a need for the technology between the products to be similar.
Pascal maintains Michelin’s claim that the tyre-maker can provide faster tyres at cheaper prices to the F1 in comparison to any of their counterparts & competitors.
