Nokian expands Hakka portfolio
Five new tyre formats are being added to Nokian Tyres’ Hakka range of tyres for trucks and buses. All are suited for all season performance and are qualified to 3PMSF criteria. The first component of this expansion is the phased introduction of four models under the new Nokian Hakka Truck Steer name.
These are steering axel tyres designs for medium and long haul driving in all seasons, and incorporate a series of innovations for improved endurance and resistance. Teppo Siltanen, product manager for heavy tyres at Nokian says: ‘Nokian Hakka Truck Steer is packed with innovations. One of them is a whole new type of sipe activator – we call them ‘Oka’ (Finnish for ‘thorn’) because of their shape.
Also, we sat down to innovate ways to prevent stone trapping. We came up with a new kind of stepped rock resistors on the groove walls, making the tyre carcass less susceptible to damage from stone drilling.” The first two models in the new premium range – a 315/80R22.5 and a 315/70R22.5 – will be available in Q3 2017. This will be followed by a 295/80R22.5 in Q4 2017; and a 385/65R22.5 tyre in Q1 2018. The final introduction is the Nokian Hakkapeliitta City Bus.
This is designed for urban public transport use throughout the year in alpine or Nordic climates. The all-position tyre has reinforced sidewalls, featuring innovative wear replacement indicators, and a tread pattern optimised for grip in snow or slushy conditions. The Finnish supplier is also promising economy.
Siltanen says: “We have tested the tread since 2015 in real city buses, and they are still in use. That means the tyres can be used in two-year rotation.” When they do wear out the new Hakkapeliitta tyres can be re-treaded, reducing their financial and environmental impact.
