Trelleborg launches ConnecTire smart wheel design.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems has developed a sensor-based smart wheel called ConnecTire that the company says enables data-sharing at multiple levels and reduces the risk of tyre slippage on the rim.
ConnecTire monitors tyre pressure and temperature in real time and relay the data to tractor and farm mainframes through Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Piero Mancinelli, R&D director at Trelleborg Wheel Systems, said: “ConnecTire is about ensuring efficiency and sustainability. Tyres are required to work intelligently and to be at the right pressure at all times.”
Operating farm machinery at the lowest safe pressure to reduce the impact on topsoil is a key challenge, according to Trelleborg. The ConnecTire system allows operators to set a target tyre pressure and then monitor how that pressure deviates from the target and act accordingly. Should corrective action be required, ConnecTire automatically sends an alert via its app for minimum disruption and maximum machine safety.
Beyond tyre monitoring, ConnecTire has GPS capability that identifies tractor location for the safeguarding of workers and equipment. It also uses software to help farm managers track the number of machine passes over the land, helping to limit soil compaction and erosion.
Mancinelli commented: “With ConnecTire, we saw an opportunity to help reduce this effect by providing the data that allows farms to identify at-risk areas and mitigate this. Efficient use of land is essential and by reducing the number of machine passes, ConnecTire helps the soil to rapidly recover fertility and yield potential.” ConnecTire will be on display at the Agritechnica trade fair for agricultural machinery, November 12-18 in Hanover, Germany.
